On Tuesday, 16 February 2021, ENGSO Honorary President Birgitta Kervinen and Equality Within Sport (EWS) Committee member and a General Secretary of our associated member, EGLSF, Sarah Townsend participated in the first meeting of European Commission’s High Level Group on Gender Equality in Sport.
The meeting began with welcoming remarks from Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth. As a guest speaker, Birgitta Kervinen presented the role of ENGSO and its activities in achieving gender equality in the European sport.
Sarah Townsend, member of the High Level Group on Gender Equality in Sport, shared her thoughts about the meeting: “I am confident that the tremendous knowledge and expertise in this new High Level Group for Gender Equality in Sport will develop concrete actions to build on the work already achieved in the previous gender equality strategy to make the advances necessary for all women to find their rightful place in the European sporting world.”
The aim of the High Level Group on Gender Equality in Sport is to discuss the way forward and to improve gender equality in sport, as the Gender Equality – Proposal for strategic actions 2014-2020 adopted by the European Commission comes to its end. The group will meet every two months thereafter to make proposals to the European Commission, Member States and the sport movement in the field of gender equality in sport. The group’s goal is to propose concrete actions that can be implemented at a national and European level.
