Sports For Climate Action Framework

In December 2020, ENGSO President Stefan Bergh, ENGSO Secretary-General Sara Massini and ENGSO Youth chair Ugne Chmeliauskaitė signed the Sports For Climate Action Framework, initiated by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

With the signature, ENGSO and ENGSO Youth express the organisations’ intent to support and implement the principles enshrined in the Sports for Climate Action Framework and their commitment to working collaboratively with friends, partners and relevant stakeholders to enhance the climate action agenda in the sports sector.

The signature also supports the idea and the initiative to use sports as a unifying tool to drive climate awareness and action among global citizens.

Sports for Climate Action Framework includes information on the Paris Agreement and its implications on the sport sector, and presents an opportunity for the sports organisations to become climate leaders through presenting five sports for climate action principles.

The sport sector can display climate leadership by engaging actively and collectively in the climate neutrality journey, by taking responsibility for their climate footprint, helping the global movement and incentivising action beyond sports to take meaningful and transformative climate action.

Since 2019, ENGSO has been a partner in the Erasmus+ funded project Playing Green: volunteering for greener sports events. The project has been creating volunteering opportunities focused on sport and environment for young people to engage in sport.

Project partners have involved volunteers to develop a “green football league”, as a pilot case to test a new volunteering format, which will be afterwards adapted to other sports. Through this volunteering programme the partners had the opportunity to 1) involve a new group of people (youth interested in sustainability) into doing sports; 2) increase the commitment to sustainability of grassroots sport events, and 3) develop green skills among volunteers that will be useful in their professional life.
