The European Week of Sport is an annual initiative, led by the European Commission, that promotes more active, healthier lifestyles to millions of people in Europe and beyond. Each year the initiative takes place between 23-30 September.
In 2024, the Opening of the European week of Sport was organised under the Hungarian presidency of the Council of the European Union, and held in Budapest, Hungary at the National Athletics Centre. ENGSO ExCom member Gyarfas Olah and ENGSO Secretary General Sara Massini attended the Opening, on 23 September, and the High-level Ministerial and International Conference of Sport Leaders on legacy of major sporting events, held on 24 September 2024.
This year the European Week of Sport promotes the EU values and the values of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games while focusing on three pillars: inclusion, well-being and belonging.
The High-level Ministerial and International Conference on the Legacy of Major Sporting Events which took place a day after the Opening of the European Week of Sport, gathered sport leaders, policy makers, and representatives from the European sport community. The event initiated a structured dialogue and collaboration aimed at advancing the mission and legacy of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the modern era.
The event was a valuable occasion to learn more about the new strategy and examples for ensuring the legacy of major sport events and also to reconnect with partners and stakeholders to further discuss our cooperation.
ENGSO delegation discussed the strategy to develop joint project with the European Lotteries Senior Policy Officer & Sport Secretary Alvise Angelini, define common activities with EUSA Projects & Policy Manager Andrej Pisl, and exchange ideas with the representatives of Sport Unit of the European Commission about our work on gender equality.
Within the framework of the European Week of Sport, ENGSO contributed to the #BeActive campaign and promoted access to sport and physical activity among the European citizens and sport professionals.
ENGSO hosted the online seminar entitled “Transforming Sports through Accessibility” and organised by EWS Committee, which explained how to provide access to sport events and physical activity initiatives by introducing the newly released guidelines for hosting inclusive events.
On top of this, ENGSO together with its member Kosovo Olympic Committee organised an event to promote sport among children from elementary school. The focus of the event was to support children in experiencing and testing their basketball skills while learning about values in sport. The activity was implemented, in cooperation with Albanian NOC, within the framework of the project Sport as Value, co- funded by Erasmus+ Sport programme.
