European Parliament approves a report on assessment of the progress of the EU's LGBTIQ Equality Strategy 2020-2025

On 8 February 2024, in Strasbourg, the European Parliament approved a report that assesses the progress of the EU's LGBTIQ Equality Strategy 2020-2025.

Members of the European Parliament discussed the variation in openness among Member States for the EU’s Equality Strategy, in addition to the rise of hate speech and crimes and violence against LGBTIQ+ community. They called on the European Commission and Member States to promote safe and inclusive environments in sports and among other domains like education and culture by implementing measures under EU law for non-compliance with breaches of fundamental rights.

To ensure a strong commitment of ENGSO to reaching equality and inclusion, the Equality Within Sport (EWS) Committee was formed and a new Action Plan for Equality was initiated. In 2022 and 2023, the participation of LGBTQI+ people in sport (with focus on LBTQI+ women in 2023) were the key themes the action plan researched and promoted. The research conducted and resourced developed can be found here: www.engso-education.eu/equality
