European coordination meeting on gender equality in sport organised by EWS

On 13 November 2023, ENGSO EWS Committee organised a European coordination meeting on gender equality in sport in Madrid, Spain.

Several organisations involved in the work on gender equality in sport in Europe took part in the meeting, under the coordination of ENGSO represented by Sara Massini, ENGSO Secretary General, Sallie Barker, EWS Chair, and Tarja Krum, EWS Vice-Chair:

 

  • Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS) of the Council of Europe, represented by Francine Hetherington Raveney, EPAS Deputy Executive Secretary
  • Sport Unit of the European Commission, represented by Violeta Birzniece, DG EAC
  • Global Obervatory for Gender Equality & Sport, represented by Lombe Mwambwa, Research Director 
  • European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation (EGLSF), represented by  Sarah Townsend, Co-President
  • European Olympic Committee, represented by Annamarie Phelps, Chair of the EOC Commission on Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion 

International Working Group on Women in Sport (IWG), represented by Annamarie Phelps, Chair of the IWG UK Secretariat and Co-Chair of the IWG Global Executive

The aim of the meeting was to gain an understanding of each organisation’s current goals and work in the area of gender equality, to identify any duplication and gaps and to discuss how to work together in the future. During the meeting, the participants agreed on future actions. 

 

The meeting served as a “coordination table” for improving gender equality in sport. In future, the group plans to work and invite other stakeholders with the goal of strengthening the partnerships and the effort in making European sport gender equal.
