ENGSO’s new Erasmus+ partnerships kicks off: SAFE — safeguarding approaches focusing on grassroots sport environment

Despite the acceleration of efforts led by major international sport institutions, sport enthusiasts across Europe are no longer surprised to read about cases of abuse and mistreatment occurring in their local clubs, in neighbouring gyms, or even within their own sport federations. Each new case is not only a personal tragedy for those affected, but also a reminder of persistent weaknesses in safeguarding measures at the grassroots sport level.

In response to this challenge, ENGSO has officially launched its new Erasmus+ Sport partnership project called SAFE — Safeguarding Approaches Focusing on grassroots sport Environment. The initiative started on 1 January 2026 and will continue until 31 December 2028.

The SAFE project aims to strengthen safeguarding practices where they are needed most: in the everyday sport environments where children, young people, and adult participants train, compete, and build communities. Rather than starting from scratch, SAFE builds on existing initiatives and previous work in safeguarding, with a strong focus on adaptability.

The project recognises that grassroots sport is not the same everywhere in Europe. Clubs vary in size, resources, culture, and structure, and safeguarding approaches must be flexible enough to work in different realities while remaining effective and consistent in their core principles.

At its heart, SAFE seeks to widely disseminate the most suitable safeguarding tools for grassroots sport, supporting a broader cultural change across the sector. The project is designed not only to provide guidelines, but also to help sport organisations develop the readiness and confidence to apply safeguarding mechanisms in practice. On the basis of an in-depth analysis of current safeguarding frameworks, SAFE will develop awareness materials, educational resources, and micro-learning tools that can be used by sport organisations across Europe. By empowering organisations at local level, SAFE aims to support leaders, coaches, managers, and volunteers in becoming active drivers of safer sport environments.

The SAFE project is coordinated by ENGSO and supported by a strong and diverse partnership. Other partners include:

  • Sportieq,
  • Finlands Svenska Idrott,
  • Bulgarian Sports Federation for Children and Youth at Risk,
  • Sportzentrum Mitte in the city of Salzburg,
  • Sports Federation Union of Catalonia  – UFEC,
  • Bragança Football Association,
  • European Gay & Lesbian Sport Federation,
  • European Olympic Academies,
  • EuroHockey,
  • Swedish Sports Confederation,
  • Italian Rugby Federation,
  • EduTech Gamechanger AB.

This wide network brings together expertise from different sport systems, disciplines, and perspectives, strengthening the project’s capacity to develop practical and inclusive solutions for safeguarding in sport.

The partners will meet for the first time in Brussels, Belgium, on 18–19 March 2026, marking the beginning of a collaborative effort to improve safeguarding readiness and drive long-term change in grassroots sport across Europe.
