Conversation on sport; The closing event of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU

The closing event of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the European Union was held on 30 November – 1 December 2021 in Brussels, Belgium.

ENGSO’s policy director Mr Laurent Briel participated in the session which included a discussion on the role of sport in society, entitled “Conversation on sport”. The event included high ranking guests, including the European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Ms Mariya Gabriel, the Member of the European Parliament, Mr Tomasz Frankowski, and Minister of Education, Science and Sport of Slovenia, Ms Simona Kustec.

 
 

The event welcomed professional athletes Vesna Fabjan, Primož Roglič, Dejan Fabčič and Rožle Prezelj who engaged in a debate on the role of sports in society.

 

Earlier this week, the Council of the European Union approved a resolution on the key features of the European Sport Model. On the occasion of the closing event, Mr Tomasz Frankowski presented his work on the European Sport Model and its key features: values-based, pyramidal structure, organised sport, structured on a national basis, and by one federation per sport, solidarity with lower-tier sport levels and the promotion of open competitions.

 

On behalf of ENGSO, Mr Briel expressed special appreciation to Mr Frankowski for his work on the recognition of the grassroots sport sector within the European sport.
