“Connecting for Change”: ENGSO EWS attends the Global Observatory for Gender Equality and Sport Conference

On September 30, 2025 ENGSO EWS vice-chair Sarah Townsend attended the Global Observatory for Gender Equality & Sport Conference in Lausanne, Switzerland, which had as a theme this year "Connecting for Change"

After words of welcome from the President of the State Council State of Vaud – Christelle Luisier Brodard, President of the Global Observatory for Gender Equality & Sport – Felicite Rwemarika, Lombe Mwambwa, CEO of the Global Observatory for Gender Equality & Sport briefly presented the focus of their work, highlighting the newly launched Knowledge Hub. 

The day progressed with 8 different sessions that addressed gender equality in sport on issues including:

Meaningful inclusion and participation in and through sport, where panelists, including ENGSO member EGLSF – represented by co-president Hugh Torrance – explored sport for development, human rights and sport, and approaches for a fully inclusive world of sport. 

 

Panelists of the session Who is responsible for preventing and responding to gender-based violence? presented recent research on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and survivor-based initiatives.

 

Measuring Impact – Going beyond the numbers explored strategies to measure gender equality outcomes in meaningful and impactful ways, highlighting the need for exposing the stories behind the statistics.

The transformative role of technology and AI in sport

 

Reimagining sport – Athlete empowerment focused on lived experience, and panelists shared their personal journeys and how they are, and can further use these experiences to build safer sport communities for other women and girls.

 

Participatory approaches in sport, where workshop participants brainstormed approaches to meaningful involvement of participants in program design and delivery.

Change making – Shaping the future of sport and gender equality where speakers spoke of challenges in framing future initiatives and building on current ones to ensure equitable sport, physical activity and physical education systems
